Explainable AI:
AI is often perceived as a black box and decisions are often difficult to understand. Explainable AI is a method for visualizing the basis of the AI’s decisions so that it can intervene in a targeted manner if the wrong decisions are made.

Few shot learning:
In order to train or optimize deep learning models, many samples per class must be available. The method of few shot learning makes it possible to train or optimize a classifier using just a few samples
With Advanced Vision System (AVS), we are working on a new generation of inspection systems that offer our customers and partners clear advantages.

AI-based defect detection:
  • Customer-specific defect classes
  • Train the AI to detect previously undetected defects
  • The AI learns the expected decor and finds anomalies if they deviate from this decor.

Hybrid approach:
  • Our system offers a hybrid approach so that conventional algorithms can also be used, where they can fully exploit their advantages.

Further advantages:
  • Reduction of external data interfaces
  • Self-monitoring (e.g. cleaning request)

Current status:
  • The first system should be available in 2026

Challenge:

  • Defects on sensitive surfaces covered with protective foil cannot be reliably distinguished from foil damage using the traditional approach.

Approach:

  • Initial applications of AI-based approaches show promising possibilities for detecting topographical defects such as dents, bumps, scratches or spots despite the protective foil.

Current status:

  • This development is being continued and tested as part of a pilot project.
Challenge:
  • Optimized analysis tools for process optimization by combining Q-Brain® classification and Q-Live® statistics enable clearer conclusions to be drawn about relevant causes of defects

Approach:
  • Thanks to a downstream AI-based evaluation of inspection results in Q-Live® , defects are meaningfully assigned to appropriate groups with industry-standard designations.
  • Existing systems can be retrofitted with this solution.

Current status:
  • Currently being implemented with a pilot customer
Challenge:
  • The expert knowledge of the user is essential for the creation of customized classifiers

Implementation:
  • Extension of the Q-Live® software for sorting defect images into Q-Brain® defect classes

Result:
  • Use case 1: Optimization of an industry-standard classifier through independent re-sorting of defect images
  • Use case 2: Creation of a customer-specific classifier in individual defect classes

Current status:
  • Several customers use the Q-Live® sorting tool to sort image data into the Q-Brain® defect classes
Challenge:
  • High oversorting due to milling material left over from the profiling process

Implementation:
  • Transfer of the technology established at Edge for detecting pseudo defects to Flooring 4.0 systems

Result:
  • Saving material and energy and more efficient throughput times in the process thanks to the significant reduction in oversorting
Challenge:
  • Pressed decor particles can only be insufficiently detected with the previous approach to defect detection

Implementation:
  • University cooperation in the form of a doctorate on the subject of “Novelty Detection”
  • Novelty detection is an AI-based approach for detecting deviations from previously learned references

Current status:
  • Creation of a prototype with promising results
Challenge:
  • Previous AI technology “Support Vector Machine” (SVM) only made it possible to sort the detection results into 2 classes (1. all defect types, 2. all types of contamination)
  • System complexity due to too many defect types
  • Abstract description of the defect types

Implementation:
  • Introduction of “Convolutional Neural Networks” (CNN) enables any number of classes

Result:
  • Summary of defect types and their naming according to industry-standard terms
  • Less training required for new employees
  • Easier to identify problems in the production process
Challenge:
  • High oversorting, due to contamination in edge processing machine e.g. glue residue, threads after scraper, milling particles
  • The previous approach to defect detection was not suitable for separating defects from non-quality-relevant contamination.

Implementation:
  • First use of “machine learning” AI technologies

Result:
  • Saving material and energy and more efficient throughput times in the process thanks to the significant reduction in oversorting
